Birds

Birds are becoming an ever-increasing problem in our towns and cities. The main problem birds include Feral Pigeons and Gulls. There are many methods used to control these birds, preventing them from landing on buildings is by far the most accepted method and this can be an art form in itself.

 

Spikes can be fixed to gutters, leading edges, window sills etc. however spikes are not always the best option for numerous reasons, some Gulls will use them as anchor points for their nests (even Gull Spikes). Gulls are a powerful bird and can dislodge them to regain access to a favoured area. Pigeons have a remarkably strong homing instinct and can sometimes force their way through spikes to be where they are used to roosting.

Bird Wire is another option and this can be used against Pigeons and Gulls, this option is particularly attractive when the aesthetics of the building are paramount as this system is difficult to see from distance. However this again needs to be fitted with care and the correct size posts need to be installed to protect against the correct birds.

 

Netting is by far the best option in most cases but again the correct mesh size net should be fitted and only top quality fixings should be used to ensure that the net stays in position for many years. Nets come in different colours to blend in with their background and when fitted properly can be very difficult to see and will give superb protection against the target species.

 

There are numerous other methods to prevent birds from landing on and in buildings and where required these can be used to provide the best option to remove troublesome birds once and for all.

Cleaning and removal of guano (fouling) and other bird waste such as nests, dead birds, feathers etc is a serious health risk and should only be undertaken by suitably trained personnel with the correct Personal Protection Equipment. This waste contains many diseases some of which can cause long term damage to the lungs. There are also bacteria's and viruses associated with birds such as Salmonellas and E.Coli. It is very important to treat this waste with a specially formulated chemical before, during and after removal to reduce the risk of harm to operatives.
Trapping and Shooting are always a last resort but sometimes due to the area where these birds are present there are no other options available.

Rodents
